Lychee trees depend heavily on water and balanced nutrition. But in early 2026, Hainan experienced one of its harshest droughts in recent years.

According to the local agricultural department, rainfall since March dropped by nearly 70% compared with normal years. 

Temperatures stayed above 37°C for long periods, weakening tree growth and reducing fruit quality across many orchards.

Farmers worked day and night, adding more water and more fertilizer, but many still struggled with fruit drop, slow coloring, and poor sweetness.

But in the middle of this extreme drought, Ms Chen’s orchard became something very different.

While many orchards were losing fruit, her lychees were already turning bright red. The branches were heavy with healthy fruit.
